Background & Challenge:

In 2019, UNICEF sought to improve its digital tools for delivering child protection education in emergency settings, particularly for children living in Mahama refugee camp. The core challenge was to provide learning experiences that were accessible without internet connectivity, yet could still deliver insights into usage patterns. The solution needed to combine play, education, and adaptability in a context with limited infrastructure.

Our Approach:

UNICEF engaged evolve to design and deliver a flexible, tech-enabled solution. We developed:

  • Two interactive tablet-based applications blending learning with play
  • Offline-first functionality to ensure accessibility regardless of connectivity
  • An analytics dashboard to monitor usage once synced online
  • Multilingual user guides (English, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi) to improve usability
  • Training for 30+ facilitators to ensure adoption and sustainability in the field

Outcome

UNICEF leveraged the dashboard to access actionable data, enhancing service delivery and program design, while empowering children in Mahama refugee camp to engage in rights education through interactive play.
